P.R.O. S.T.Y.L.E. Parents

Dear Parents and/ or Guardian:

We are pleased to inform you that your school, in partnership with the School District of Philadelphia’s Office of School Climate and Safety, Physicians for Social Responsibility, and Pro Sports Community Consultants will (once again) be participating this year in a violence prevention program. This program, called P.R.O S.T.Y.L.E (Positive and Responsible Opportunities for Student to Youth Leadership Enterprise), will focus bullying prevention and student leadership.

The ideas behind the program are designed to help end the high levels of senseless teen violence that often begins through bullying.  In taking this leadership position, your child is making history by becoming one of the founding members of the P.R.O.S.T.Y.L.E. Program.

So often, students don’t realize the impact of teasing, taunting, and bullying on their fellow students.  Usually it begins playfully and even sometimes becomes an acceptable part of youth or even neighborhood culture. But bullying hurts those who are victims. It hurts their ability to be good students and robs them of the feeling of safety and security.

Bullying is when one child or group of children repeatedly hurts another child through words or actions. Bullying may involve:

  • Physical aggression (fighting, shoving, or kicking)
  • Verbal aggression (name calling)
  • Subtle acts (isolating a child)

With the increasing amount of violence taking place in all over the city, we are confident that we can successfully combat some of these issues, if we start at the high school level. The P.R.O S.T.Y.L.E. Program will teach your child how to identify bullying as well as how to help those involved in a bullying situation. Our P.R.O.S.T.Y.L.E. students will also be trained as leaders who will not only be able to share their knowledge throughout their school but can also make a positive contribution to their home communities.

We believe that it is extremely important to create a school environment where all students feel safe, can learn, and prepare for their future college or work careers.  That is why The P.R.O S.T.Y.L.E. Program involves a total effort and the reason why your students will receive specialized mentoring, college preparatory advice, and career exploration assistance from community-based organizations like Physicians for Social Responsibility and Pro Sports Community Consultants.

As parents you play an important role in the P.R.O.S.T.Y.L.E. Program. We need you to talk to your child about their involvement in the program along with their own personal experiences with bullying and violence.  It is also important that you encourage your child to meet with the P.R.O.S.T.Y.L.E. staff during the scheduled meetings times at the school so they can get all of the benefits that come with their membership including possible field trips, lectures on careers, culture and history education, college and career scholarship tips, and overall leadership training.

This program presents the ideal situation for your child to mature, grow, and prepare for their future as a successful individual.  We are excited about their continued involvement this upcoming fall and we hope that at times you can come out and see the great work your child is doing for their school and community.

Please contact your child’s school if you have any questions or concerns about the P.R.O.S.T.Y.L.E. Program. All of the agencies involved with this initiative are confident that with your child’s participation and your support, we can make a positive impact in our community and stop the problem of bullying that have hurt so many of our young people.

We welcome and encourage your support as well as personal involvement in this program.

Sincerely,

P.R.O. S.T.Y.L.E. TEAM
